Keith Verhoeven's Horrific Experience
Managing to calm himself and again tell the story that haunts him to this day, Keith described this horrific, vicious day in detail. "I was really starting to keep pace with some of the faster players on the pond that day, and for the most part, they were really impressed, but apparently, I struck a nerve with Doug Gates. I can remember it quite clearly, I had just scored my 6th goal on my cousin Dan, and was skating back to center when I heard Doug call my name from behind, I turned to look and whammo ! I don't remember anything after that. Looking back, I always' wished I'd kept that puck they removed from my head that day, but I've been told that Doug Gates has it on display in his Living Room.

Growing up on a farm located just outside Thamesford, it was always' a dream for Keith to play hockey against the best players in Oxford County. As a young player, hanging proudly on his bedroom wall were newspaper clippings and photos of players like Robert Gates, Dave Strickler and even an autographed puck signed by Gerry Roefs, all players who for Keith, symbolized hockey excellence.

On February 10th, 1992 however, this dream soon turned into a living nightmare as he was rushed to the Stratford hospital with a hockey puck lodged in his forehead. "The pain was indescribable" say's Keith who still wakes up nightly covered with cold sweat, "It was just a fun game of pond hockey that went very very bad".
