Rob Roefs' brush with a hockey phantom

"He was wearing his old Leaf Jersey, and it smelled as if he had just finished a game. I don't have to tell you that it was enough to send shivers down my spine !"

Whether or not Rob Roefs did in fact pick up the legendary hockey player that afternoon, remains an ongoing debate in the area however, as Eric Bartram from Binning Farms explains "It wasn't raining, and Rob wasn't in Avon, he picked up Ted House downtown and ended up driving his truck into the river for some reason ! How he came up with this other stuff is beyond me."

On a cold and rainy afternoon in late October of 1985, Rob Roefs was driving his pickup truck on what was ordinarily just another routine work day. As the rain began to grow heavier, and Rob slowed his truck while entering the town of Avon, he was suddenly suprised to see a figure waving their arms at the side of the road. "It was really pouring out" tells Rob, "It seemed like I was the only vehicle out on the road that day".

Slowing his truck to offer this mysterious figure some cover from the rain, he could not have guessed what he was actually about to experience. "To this day, people still think I'm crazy for telling this story, but I tell you, as sure as I'm standing here, on that rainy afternoon, I picked up the legendary Bill Barilko !"
